#proudteacher

Proud. That's what I am today. All of the 5th grade students and families donated a TON of toys, socks, games, candy, jewelry, hygiene products, crafts, food and more for our Christmas Donation Project. Instead of doing a class grab bag they offered to give to others less fortunate. These bags are filled to the brim with things for babies, girls, boys, and adults. They will be donated on Friday to the YWCA NENY Domestic Violence program. I know these gifts will bring joy and happiness to their recipients. Great job Fifth Grade Team!

Biography bottles

This was a great job with a home-school connection! Students researched their famous person at school, took notes at school, wrote a paper at home, completed a speech at school but prepared at home, and made a bottle person at home. So impressed with students and parents for taking this project on with such enthusiasm! Bravo!!
These are just some of the models. The rest were relocated to the library already.

Math games lessons 1.1-1.5

The students were giggling with cheer! Not something you would typically think of when you think "math". Well in 5S, we do!!! Here are some fun games we have been playing to practice our math skills!
(Side note: if anyone is willing to donate candyland games no longer being used or dice I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you)
Having an in depth conversation about how to solve the question correctly.
The question giver
She got the answer right!!! Yay! She gets to move her pawn.
He got the ***special*** paper clip challenge card! It is an "explain" card and if you get it correct you get to jump to the lollipop castle!!!
Explaining his answer!
He earned the card!!! Hurray!!!

Bottle Project

Students will be coming home with their research project today (Friday, October 2). They will bring home their packet of information and are asked to turn it into a research report. They CANNOT use the internet to find additional information. They can either type it up or write it by hand. Their packet of information MUST return to school with them as this is a big part of their grade. Don’t forget that their bottle person is due Friday as well. If you have any questions, feel free to email me cstryjek@duaneburg.org

Here is an example of last year's bottles:

No newsletter this week...

Due to the internet being down in our end of the building there will be no newsletter. Our files have now been saved to a H drive and they cannot be accessed without the internet. I apologize for the inconvenience and assure you there will be one next week. Please spread the word to other parents.

PBIS carnival

We had a great PBIS Carnival day! Students sang a new theme song, walked around the track and chanted "be safe, responsible, be respectful" while holding hand made class posters, and went to many great stations. The top favorites were "the bird lady" (as the kids called her) who brought her rescues to educate us, the Schenectady County Sheriff K-9 unit demo, the alpacas, and the PTSO and bank games. It was a perfect day for a carnival. Here's to a POSITIVE year!

First official post with pictures!

Well, since I got back ALL of the students' permission forms back regarding posting pictures of students on the blog I can post these exciting pictures of our first week!!! :) THANK YOU SOOO much parents for being so quick about turning these slips in.

Firstly, I'd like to say what an absolute JOY all of your children are! They are so eager to learn and it is making me even more excited for the future of our class!
The students were working collaboratively to decide what key words go with which type of math equations. They had lots of great conversations and debates in this activity. This helped trigger those higher level thinking skills and they got to meet their new classmates! I was shocked that I couldn't trick them! They must have had some spectacular 4th grade teachers last year ;)

These are some pictures of or new classroom! I am so excited to have the kids using all the new classroom things I've created using Pinterest this summer (you will quickly see I have a huge love for all things Pinterest).
This quote I change weekly and if a student submits a quote from a famous person, online, etc. and I choose it for the week, they earn a golden ticket.
My fake texts I use for our morning message (thanks Pinterest).
Our book and post-it notes holders my mom and I made (Pinterest).

All of my garage sale find and Scholastic points earned books organized nicely for all to enjoy! <3

I can't wait to meet all the parents tomorrow at 7:10! If you can't make it don't worry I have a folder of all the handouts that I will send home with your child Friday. I also have extras for two household families. See you Thursday!
